Indexable insert grades reliably drill aluminum alloys

Walter has introduced two grades for drilling wrought and cast aluminum alloys. The WNN15 (PVD-coated) and WN15 (uncoated, polished) are available for indexable insert drills.
The WNN15 is a low-adhesion grade. The company’s drills that accept indexable inserts made of grade WNN15 include D4120, D3120, and B3212.DF. to B3214.DF in insert versions P4840, P2840, and LCGX.
A physical vapour deposition (PVD) coating is applied to the inserts using the high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) process to create a smooth, dense surface. The rake faces also are polished. As a result, chip evacuation is smooth and built-up edge (BUE) is reduced on the tool/workpiece interface. The inserts can be indexed four times.
The WNN15 grade has a hard substrate, which helps ensure it has both sharpness and strength on its cutting edge. These inserts provide a high level of wear resistance to provide long tool life even at extremely high cutting speeds, the company states.
The drills that accept WN15 grade inserts include D4120, D3120, and B3212.DF. to B3214.DF in insert versions P4840, P2840, and LCGX
